The losses caused by the earthquakes that hit eastern Turkey and the border area of Syria last February could hardly ever be estimated. In cases like this, there is also the loss of the unique work that Mehmet Y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m (in Turkish), or Memed Des\u00eem\u00ee (in Zazak\u00ee), could have provided to the world in the years to come, of studying and collecting a culture in such a delicate situation as that of the Zaza people.<\/h5>\n

Dr. Mehmet Y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m\u00a0was born in Dersim in 1974. He\u00a0died on 6 February of 2023 in Antakya, province of Hatay, victim of the earthquakes.\u00a0Y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m was an academic and researcher and\u00a0a member of Mustafa Kemal University. He was a great connoisseur of the culture of his homeland and spoke Zazak\u00ee, the severely endangered mother tongue of Ali Do\u011fan G\u00f6n\u00fclta\u015f.<\/p>\n

At the time, Ali spoke to me about this loss and how he had been impressed by Y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m’s interpretation in a style that is now almost non-existent and how he had been shocked to learn of his passing.\u00a0Below is Ali’s tribute to Dr. Y\u0131ld\u0131r\u0131m as well as some recordings of performances by himself. “This recording, made in the So\u011fanl\u0131 Valley in Cappadocia, is a tribute to the memory of Memed Des\u00eem\u00ee.<\/em><\/p>\n

Memed’s oral history and academic work in Dersim shed light on the cultural and sociological structure of the region. He vocalized and transmitted old songs according to the dialect of the region.<\/em><\/p>\n

Xeze is a female name meaning “Gazelle” in Zazak\u00ee. This traditional song from Dersim tells of a deep love.\u00a0This traditional song was compiled by Memed Des\u00eem\u00ee, who died in the earthquake in February, and his is\u00a0the first\u00a0recording of this\u00a0piece that is published\u00a0on the Internet.”<\/em>.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
