How are you? <\/strong>You see, there are many recordings of pieces of Simchat Torah but in Music Before Shabbat there are no concessions! The older the better. Simchat Torah means the joy the with the Torah and the ritual consist on\u00a0getting the Torah rolls out of the ark and dancing with it. Why? Because the reading of the Torah is going to be completed. A new cycle of reading will start.<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #2e2e2e;\"><strong>Dancing with the Torah?\u00bf?\u00bf?\u00a0?<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Yes, literally. You can see it\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WzD1nmlWUjA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>, for instance. And\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7XRk5pFOePM&amp;feature=youtu.be&amp;t=14\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>, you can see it too and women dance too, of course!<\/div>\n<div><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>? The picture is Jew with Torah, by Marc Chagall, from 1925. I found it very appropiate for this occasion.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #2f4f4f; font-family: playfair display, georgia, times new roman, serif;\"><strong>Who were those &#8220;Belf&#8217;s Romanian Orchestra&#8221;?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2f4f4f;\">I was expecting to find the bio of Mr. Belf&#8230; Hehe, no way. At the website of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.freie-radios.net\/portal\/content.php?id=35465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Audio Portal of Community Radios<\/a>, accredited to the &#8220;Radaktion Jiddische Kultur &#8211; Dr. Juliane Lensch und Clemens Riesser, Radio\u00a0RUM-90,1&#8221;, I found this:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>&#8220;Belf&#8217;s Romanian Orchestra &#8211; Rumynski Orkestr Belfa, an early document of historical recordings of klezmer kapelies from Eastern Europe. Not much is known about this band. Neither the line-up nor where the klezmorim performed. Not even the first name of the leader of the &#8220;Belf&#8217;s Romanian Orchestra&#8221; V. Belf is known. But it is certain that these are very early recordings from Eastern Europe. These recordings were made between 1908 and 1914, i.e. before the First World War, and are probably the first recordings that are still known to us today.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2f4f4f;\">Despite that, there are a lot of recordings by this orchestra and it is very influential on the current klezmer artists. According to\u00a0Kurt Bjorling on\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/muziker.org\/klezmer-resources-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Musiker.org<\/a>:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>&#8220;The \u2018Belf\u2019s Romanian Orchestra\u2019 is a quartet consisting of clarinet, two violins, and piano. They recorded at least 60 pieces for the Syrena record company from 1912-14. Syrena was a Russian-owned record company operating in Warsaw before the First World War. These records are rare today, but they were highly influential, in both America and Europe, at the time they were made and distributed. These same recordings have also been highly influential in the \u2018klezmer revival\u2019 of today. The Belf Orchestra recorded at least 28 pieces for two other record companies, Amur and Extraphon, but none of these are yet known to exist in any collection.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Do you want to learn more about Sirena record company?<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.belfology.com\/notes\/SirenaStory.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check this page<\/a>\u00a0at Belfology.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">This is nowadays\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/place\/Pi%C4%99kna+33,+05-075+Warszawa,+Poland\/@52.2231202,21.0062029,2204m\/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x471ecceef73d422b:0x921feca62db4b5f2!8m2!3d52.222928!4d21.013898?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">33 Pi\u0119kna\u00a0street in Warsaw<\/a>,\u00a0where Sirena Records settled their first pressing plant\u00a0<span style=\"color: #2f4f4f;\">?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/bc493816d894ee14ba9103e7b\/images\/1b20fe2f-28aa-4797-9269-d82b81a7dd02.png\" width=\"696\" height=\"389\" data-file-id=\"1881628\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>In The Fiddle Handbook, by Chris Haigh, he say:<em>&#8220;Belf was actually from the Ukraine; the use of the word Romanian was probably more of a marketing ploy than anything else. [&#8230;] These recordings offer one of the chief surviving insights into the repertoire and style of Old World klezmorim.&#8221;<\/em><span style=\"color: #2f4f4f;\">The author refers to the work\u00a0by\u00a0Jeffrey Wollock: \u201cEuropean Recordings of Jewish Instrumental Folk Music, 1911-14\u201d in the ARSC Journal, volume XXVIII \/ i 1997. (Association for Recorded Sound Collections)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Do you want to listen to more pieces by the Belf&#8217;s Romanian Orchestra?\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/RumynskiOrkestrBelfa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Check this page<\/a>\u00a0at the Internet Archive.<\/strong><\/h5>\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"color: #2f4f4f;\">In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/bivolitaklezmer.bandcamp.com\/track\/belf-khosidls-in-e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bandcamp of Bivoli\u021ba Klezmer<\/a>, band from Connecticut, they mention that:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em>&#8220;Romanian apparently signaled \u201cJewish\u201d in the record market at the time, and also the more elaborate, developed music of the klezmer \u201csouth.\u201d Many of the 42 Belf sides are of the slow dance form khosidl\u2014which is almost unknown in the American discography and represents a large shift in the musical tastes of immigrant Jewish communities. These pieces show the introspective side of the khosidl genre, which developed as way for secular, Misnagdic Jews to incorporate an element of Hasidic spirituality into what became a highly individual, expressive dance form.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>What is that of &#8220;Misnagdic&#8221;? Misnagdic are considered the oposition to Hasidism. The artist is\u00a0Chana Helen Rosenberg, born in 1946 in UK and settled in the historic city of Be\u2019er Sheva (Israel). The lady on the film is an actress, Maud Gentien, no a musician from the trio.
