Yes, I am a bit delayed today!!! But this is still before Shabbat! I have had very busy days and here I am again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In this occasion, we follow the thread of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mapamundimusica.com\/en\/musicbeforeshabbat\/english-mbs-with-the-black-cantor-thomas-la-rue-through-henry-sapoznik\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thomas La-Rue, the black cantor&#8217;s\u00a0story<\/a>, who performed in Warsaw at a time where the Great Synagogue at T\u0142omackie Street\u00a0was the landmark of hazzanut. La-Rue didn&#8217;t perform there, but many other cantors did, like our protagonist of today, Gershon Sirota, whose life is connected, for better and for worse, with the city.<\/p>\n<p>I won&#8217;t hide that I have a special love for Poland, that country in which, according to my dear Janusz Prusinowski, <em>there is still the feeling of something that is lacking:\u00a0it is the presence of Jews<\/em>. According to Sztetl.org.pl\u00a0<em>&#8220;On 16 May 1943, explosives were set up around the site and the synagogue was blown up personally by General Stroop to mark the end of his mission to exterminate all Warsaw Jews&#8221;<\/em>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, f*** you, Stroop: the synagogue dissapeared but\u00a0the headquarters of the Main Judaic Library and of the Institute for Judaic Studies, that are here in the picture on the left, are\u00a0now the<strong>\u00a0Jewish Historical Institute<\/strong>\u00a0and the Jews were not erased from Polish land. The architect was Leandro Marconi, who also built the Synagogue No\u017cyk\u00f3w, the only one that survived the\u00a0World War II (more info,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/warszawa.jewish.org.pl\/en\/religion\/nozyk-synagogue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">at the website of Jewish.org.pl)<\/a>. The grand opening and consecration of the synagogue took place on the day of Rosh Hashanah of the year 5639 (on 26 September 1878). Find much more information about the building and its history and the use by the community in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sztetl.org.pl\/en\/towns\/w\/18-warsaw\/112-synagogues-houses-of-prayer-and-others\/89718-great-synagogue-tlomackie-street-warsaw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sztetl<\/a>, a website by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polin.pl\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">POLIN Museum<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<div>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">Let&#8217;s visit the Great Synagogue<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.arikboas-animation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/bc493816d894ee14ba9103e7b\/images\/ad2add46-29f4-4323-92bc-61e0715d6095.jpg\" width=\"206\" height=\"NaN\" align=\"right\" data-file-id=\"1843188\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.arikboas-animation.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arik Boas Animation<\/a>\u00a0made a few years ago this animation you have below, for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bh.org.il\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Museum of the Jewish People (Beit Hatfutsot)<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pay attention to the face of the chazzan! Doesn&#8217;t he look like\u00a0Gershon Yitzchok Sirota? In fact he does, but note that the singer in this animation is accredited to be another superb cantor, also born in Ukraine, but about whom I haven&#8217;t found references of his presence in Warsaw at the Great Synagogue: Yossele Rosenblatt, who will be our star in a future MBS &#8211;&gt;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div><strong>Anyway, immerse yourself in the Great Synagogue!\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qerOiePBcBM\" width=\"700\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #2f4f4f; font-family: playfair display, georgia, times new roman, serif;\"><strong>The great chazzan at the most prestigious position in the cantorial world<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<h6>Gershon Sirota became the Obercantor in the Great Synagogue in 1907. The World War II brought\u00a0the end of the Synagogue and also of Sirota.<\/h6>\n<p>According to Rabbi Geoffrey Shisler,\u00a0<em>&#8220;Not without good reason was Gershon Sirota spoken of as the &#8216;Jewish Caruso.&#8217; Even with the poor quality recordings that we have of him today, it&#8217;s quite clear that he had a most extraordinary voice and since he was a contemporary of Caruso (1873 &#8211; 1938), the comparison was bound to be made. An apocryphal story has it that Caruso would come to hear Sirota sing or conduct a service whenever\u00a0they were in the same town at the same time.<\/em>&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/bc493816d894ee14ba9103e7b\/images\/052a689c-6ae9-41cb-8bda-8d092ad2c0d7.jpg\" width=\"250\" height=\"327\" align=\"left\" data-file-id=\"1843256\" \/>Gershon\u00a0was born in Podolia in 1874. His father was a cantor in the local synagogue and, already as a child, Gershon helped his father in the services. The family moved to Odessa, where he would be\u00a0cantor in Shalashner Shul. Later he gave service at the\u00a0Shtat Synagogue of Vilna. His performances granted him more and more popularity and was called to make special concerts in many cities around, first in Russia and Poland, and later much further.\u00a0<strong>He was\u00a0the first cantor to record his voice on phonograph records and he became world famous thanks to this.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Between 1912 and 1927 he toured in many ocassions at the USA. It made him lose his position in the Great Synagogue, because he was absent too much time, specially in the High Holy Days. No problem. He was already a very demanded star.<\/p>\n<p>He toured at the USA for his last time in 1938. It is sad that he didn&#8217;t decide to stay there. He had to return to Warsaw because his wife was very ill. The start of the war found him there. The family was imprisoned in the Guetto, where he would conduct the High Holy Day services in 1941.<\/p>\n<p>In the first months of 1943, a strong resistence arised in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/encyclopedia.ushmm.org\/content\/en\/article\/warsaw-ghetto-uprising\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Guetto of Warsaw and an uprising started on April 19<\/a>. The bombing of our Synagogue, that\u00a0was out of the Guetto, was the symbol of the end of that\u00a0uprising.
