When you grow and learn, you stop doing that kind of categorical assertions&#8230;<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/bc493816d894ee14ba9103e7b\/images\/29924501-ffe1-4efb-acc3-3f2172681f33.png\" width=\"125\" height=\"122\" align=\"none\" data-file-id=\"1668184\" \/><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"color: #2f4f4f;\"><strong>I discovered this piece when it was released in 2003 and I have to accept that, 17 years after, it still blows my mind.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n<p><em>Meshuge\u00a0<\/em>means crazy in Yiddish.\u00a0And<strong>\u00a0Meshuge Klezmer Band<\/strong>\u00a0is a band from Verona, Italy. After many years without news, I got to find the violinist, Maria Vicentini (<em>grazie<\/em>!), in Facebook, to check if\u00a0the band is still active. Yes, they are. I am linking her profile in her portrait, in case you wanted to contact them (By the way, there is a\u00a0<strong>Meshouge Klezmer Band<\/strong>\u00a0too, from Bordeaux, France, also active. They are two different bands).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=1206426039\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/mcusercontent.com\/bc493816d894ee14ba9103e7b\/images\/bcbb8111-57be-4d01-9484-29f2ede6a517.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Maria Vicentini, violonist of Meshuge Klezmer Band\" width=\"180\" height=\"592\" align=\"left\" data-file-id=\"1742328\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Find below the link to listen their <strong><em>Der Alternative Bulgar<\/em><\/strong>. It is their outstanding rendition of the very popular\u00a0<em>Der Alter Bulgar\u00a0<\/em>(the bulgar of the old time), of which you can find many other approaches by artists like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lk-E0VbgxkU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Itzkhak Perlman<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Dfcdm-nddpc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Quartet Klezmer Trio<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.es\/Der-Alter-Bulgar\/dp\/B0097ZNJH0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hester Street Troupe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>But, what is &#8220;bulgar&#8221;?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<div>\n<p>Bulgar is a danceable klezmer music style. It&#8217;s background must be traced from the Bessarabian dance style\u00a0under the name of\u00a0<em>bulg\u0103reasc\u0103<\/em>, documented in the first half of XIX Century. The style would develope after the contact of professional klezmorim from hereditary caste\u00a0with Gypsy professional musicians. From there, it spreaded as the klezmer\u00a0<em>bulgarish\u00a0<\/em>to parts of Eastern Ukraine.From the last decades of XIX Century, many klezmorim emigrated to the USA and the style started to be identified as a danceable klezmer style shared between musicians from different regions. It took its definite shape in New York between 1920 and 1950, with the work of professional musicians (like\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.mapamundimusica.com\/en\/musicbeforeshabbat\/naftule-brandwein-fun-tashlach\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Naftule Brandwein<\/a>, that was our star two weeks ago) and the term\u00a0<em>bulgar\u00a0<\/em>finally epitomized the repertoire of\u00a0dance music at the USA (but not at all in Europe), according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/profile.php?id=100011600950092\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walter Z. Feldman<\/a>\u00a0(after his work of 1994, that is really advisable,\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.academia.edu\/38287313\/Bulgareasca_Bulgarish_Bulgar_The_Transformation_of_a_Klezmer_Dance_Genre?auto=download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bulg\u0103reasc\u0103\/Bulgarish\/Bulgar: The Transformation of a Klezmer Dance Genre<\/a>,\u00a0<\/em>and I just made a super reduced summary).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Back to Meshuge Klezmer band,\u00a0<\/strong>they released three albums:\u00a0<em>Dreild<\/em>\u00a0(2003),\u00a0<em>Treyf 1929<\/em>\u00a0(2005) and\u00a0<em>Musiker!\u00a0<\/em>(2008). They were chosen by David Krakauer for his compiltaion\u00a0<em>Music from the Winery<\/em>.\u00a0<em>Der Alternative Bulgar<\/em>\u00a0is in their first album.
