Thanos Stavridis is one of the most prominent accordionists on the contemporary Balkan music scene. Born in Greece, he began playing the accordion at the age of four and has never parted from it since, turning it into a true extension of his body and his artistic voice. With a solid background in ethnomusicology and advanced studies in harmony, counterpoint and fugue, he has devoted nearly three decades to researching and performing traditional Balkan music, shaping a personal style where folk roots, contemporary creativity and unmistakable expressiveness come together.
Throughout his career, Stavridis has collaborated with artists such as Theodosii Spassov, Vlatko Stefanovski, Petar Ralchev and Alkistis Protopsalti, among many others, performing on stages across Europe. His solo discography includes the albums A Suitcase Full of Dreams, Spicy Margarita and Ciel, all of which have earned international recognition in specialised media. In addition to his work as a performer and composer, he has taught at the University of Ioannina since 2009 and regularly leads workshops on Greek and Balkan music.
An essential part of his musical path is the group Drom, a quintet focused on the popular music of the Balkans with a strong folk identity. With this ensemble, he has appeared at festivals such as Orbelus Spring (Bulgaria), Grecomania in Brussels and SoFest in Sofia, making it clear that their artistic vision goes far beyond labels. Thanos Stavridis and Drom radiate contagious energy and a deep passion for living tradition — one that is not preserved in a museum but reinvented with every performance.
